Privacy Policy
This privacy policy applies to the Chronicles app (hereby referred to as "Application") for iOS devices, created by Leon Grimmeisen (hereby referred to as "Service Provider") as a freemium service. This service is intended for use "AS IS".
The short version: Chronicles does not collect your data. Your voice recordings, transcripts, and journal entries never leave your device, and the Service Provider has no ability to access them.
No Data Collection
Chronicles is built so that all core functionality (voice recording, speech-to-text transcription, and AI-generated titles and summaries) runs entirely on your device using on-device machine learning models.
The Application does not collect, transmit, store, or process any personal data on external servers. Specifically, the Application does not:
- Upload your voice recordings, transcripts, or journal entries anywhere
- Require or offer user accounts
- Collect analytics, usage statistics, or crash reports tied to your identity
- Use advertising or tracking SDKs of any kind
- Collect your location, contacts, or any other device data
This is why the Application's App Store privacy label states "Data Not Collected."
Microphone Access
The Application requests access to your device's microphone solely to record your journal entries. Recordings are stored locally on your device. Audio is never transmitted off your device by the Application.
On-Device AI and Model Download
On first launch, the Application downloads a speech-recognition model (approximately 600 MB) from a content delivery server. This is a one-way download of model files only; no personal data is sent in this process. After the download, transcription and entry generation run fully on-device, and the Application's core features work without any network connection.
iCloud Backup (Optional)
You may optionally enable iCloud backup for your journal. If enabled, your entries are stored in your personal, private iCloud account, protected by your Apple Account credentials and Apple's security measures. This data is governed by Apple's iCloud terms and privacy policy. The Service Provider has no access to it. You can disable iCloud backup at any time in the Application's settings.
Purchases
Subscriptions and one-time purchases are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. The Service Provider does not receive or store your name, payment details, or billing information. Payment data is governed by Apple's privacy policy.
Notifications
If you enable a daily reminder, notifications are scheduled locally on your device. No notification data is sent to external servers.
Data Retention and Deletion
All journal data is stored on your device (and, if enabled, in your private iCloud). You are in full control:
- Export all entries as Markdown at any time from Settings
- Delete individual entries, or all data at once, from Settings
- Uninstalling the Application removes all locally stored data
Because the Service Provider never receives your data, there is nothing for the Service Provider to retain or delete on your behalf.
Children
The Application does not collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13. It contains no accounts, social features, or data submission of any kind.
Security
Your journal data is protected by your device's built-in security (encryption at rest as provided by iOS and, where applicable, iCloud encryption). Since no data is transmitted to the Service Provider, the most common privacy risks simply do not apply.
Changes
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. Continued use of the Application after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
